"I gots to talk
I gotta tell what I feel
I gotta talk about my life as I see it"
Who am I? A question we all ask ourselves, yet only few can give a definitive answer.
My name is Nacho and I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. My family and I moved to Los Angles when I was young. I spent most of my childhood in a small city near Inglewood named Lennox, but currently reside in Watts, Los Angeles. I love my hood and will forever embody that aspect of my personality. People use the word 'hoodlum' as an insult, but that's part of who I am. You see, as a hoodlum, you're forced to see the world in a different light. When you grow up like how I did, art and creativity were never seen as a means to an end. I was always under the impression that 'art' was just a hobby for rich white people. Thanks to my elementary school standardized test scores, I was lucky enough to attend an affluent private school in a fancy suburb in Los Angles. While I was a student there, not only did I learn how to write like this, but I was introduced to clay. I immediately fell in love with clay. It's malleability reminded me of my ability to adapt and mold to my environment. It's maturity and durability reminded me of my resilience and permanence. The more I worked with clay the more I felt one with it. I attended the University of Colorado Boulder as a mechanical engineering student, but after two years of not feeling fulfilled, I decided to major in what I truly love: art and ceramics. The support I've received is remarkable, and I can genuinely say that I am truly blessed with my decision. Work doesn't seem like work when you do what you love. With regards to my future, I tend to let the universe push me in whatever direction seems fit, but I hope to inspire other young hoodlums out there. I want to make it known that being an artist and following your creative calling is a viable means to a successful career. At the end of the day though, I'm just having fun with it.
With love always. - Nacho
